Learn how to play Japanese Fluxx 3.0 with its English titles, unique keeper art, and stiff cards. Follow our step-by-step rules and card overview.

Quick answer

Japanese Fluxx 3.0 plays like standard Fluxx: draw a card, play a card, and follow the current rules. The English titles on each card let you play even if you don't read Japanese.

What makes Japanese Fluxx 3.0 different

This edition was one of the first licensed Fluxx versions, based on Fluxx 3.0. The original black-and-white art was replaced with new Keeper art by Japanese artists, giving the deck a distinct look. English titles are included on each card, so you can recognize cards by name even if the rest of the text is in Japanese. The cards are notably stiffer than regular playing cards, which affects shuffling and handling.

Card types you will encounter

The deck follows the familiar Fluxx structure: Keepers (placed in front of you), Goals (determine winning condition), Actions (one-time effects), New Rules (change gameplay), and Creepers (hinder you). Because the card text is in Japanese, you will rely on the English titles and your knowledge of Fluxx 3.0 to interpret effects. If you are new to Fluxx, keep a reference of standard card effects handy.

Step-by-step: How to play Japanese Fluxx 3.0

  1. Set up the game: Place the Basic Rules card in the center. Shuffle the deck and deal three cards to each player. Put the rest of the deck face down as the draw pile. Check that everyone has exactly three cards before starting.
  2. Choose the first player: The player who most recently drew a card goes first, or decide randomly. Play proceeds clockwise. Agree on the starting player to avoid confusion.
  3. Take your turn: draw: Draw the number of cards indicated by the current Draw rule (usually 1). If a New Rule changes the draw count, follow that. Always check the current Draw rule before drawing.
  4. Take your turn: play: Play the number of cards indicated by the current Play rule (usually 1). You may play a card from your hand or choose to play none if the rule allows. If you have no cards to play, you must still follow the Play rule; if it requires a play and you cannot, discard and redraw.
  5. Resolve card effects: If you play a New Rule, place it next to the Basic Rules and follow it immediately. If you play an Action, do what it says, then discard it. If you play a Keeper, place it face up in front of you. If you play a Goal, place it in the center. New Rules stay in play; Actions are discarded after use.
  6. Check for a winning condition: After each play, check if any player's Keepers match the current Goal. If so, that player wins immediately. Remember that Creepers may prevent a win; check the Goal card for Creeper restrictions.
  7. Handle Creepers: If you draw a Creeper, place it face up in front of you and draw a replacement card. Creepers count against you and may be moved by certain Actions. You cannot win if a Creeper is in front of you unless the Goal allows it.
